On January 14, 2011, 17-year-old Rainia “NeNe” Holmes passed away from complications of epilepsy. After experiencing seizures, Rainia would often enter a postictal state, temporarily unable to speak. During these moments, her brother, Ryan Holmes, encouraged her to give “one thumbs up” — a simple but powerful gesture to let her loved ones know she was okay. This small sign of reassurance became a symbol of resilience, positivity, and strength in the face of adversity.

In Rainia’s memory, ONE THUMBS UP, Inc. was founded on September 20, 2011 by her brother, Ryan W. Holmes, Sr., to carry on her legacy of compassion and perseverance. Rainia was thoughtful, caring, and deeply believed in equality. Despite the challenges of her disability, she was determined to live independently and help others. The “thumbs up” not only became her voice but now represents the heart of our mission: to uplift and support youth with special needs.

ONE THUMBS UP, Inc. is a charitable scholarship organization dedicated to honoring Rainia’s life by making a tangible impact in the community. Since its founding, the organization has raised over $30,000 in scholarship funds for students at Bloom Township High School (Illinois) and Philander Smith College (Arkansas). These contributions have been made possible through generous donations, community partnerships, and our annual charity basketball games.

To further expand our outreach and raise awareness for epilepsy and special needs advocacy, ONE THUMBS UP, Inc. hosts a Charity Weekend each year. What began as a local effort in June has evolved into a vibrant, community-powered experience now proposed for the 3rd weekend in August — designed to reach broader audiences and grow support for epilepsy awareness.

• The Backpacks for Kids Program
